Keeping up is hard

So I said the blog was coming back. But I realize that I still can't update on a daily basis since the night life here is crazy.
I wasn't able to write anything last night for various reasons.

Friday:
First of all, I went to sleep at 2 trying to type out that blog and then talking with roommate and chatting online. But due to the inability of the school to give honors kids a decent bathroom with multiple showers, I had to wake up at 7:30 to get a chance to shower. So I did, but it still failed. I waited for like 40 minutes for a turn. I wasn't the only person who decided to wake up early apparently.
All the honors kids went to a breakfast and lecture at 9 in the morning and then for a discussion afterwards about the summer reading book that we were all assigned. My discussion leader.. was extremely weird. First of all, he taught math, not english. Second, he had a huuuuuuuge accent and I couldn't really understand what he was saying. Third, we didn't talk about the book. Ever. It was all like random conceptual things that came to his mind. It was very amusing.
After the discussion there was a gathered lunch in the Ball Room of the Michigan Union. I never realized how big that place is. There were tables set up everywhere with people all gathered in clumps. Since we were split up randomly for the discussion, the lunch process also meant that you weren't really with people that you knew. It was all random seating. After finishing the sandwich that they were serving, I decided to go take a Chinese Placement test with Ruixin. (I previously considered not taking it since the test required each person to be able to write in chinese and I haven't done so in more than 8 years.) I changed my mind and decided to actually show up, just to see how well I'd do. It turns out that my Chinese could put me in the AsLan 204 course, which if i were to take I would finish the required 4 semesters of Foreign Language. Because of this, I might take Chinese instead of Spanish. It's still in the works.
After the confusion that is Chinese Placement Test, I went to the Maize Craze at Palmer Field and met up with Elizabeth, Guarav, Prateek, Ruixin, and Kelvin. It was a huge gathering of college students of all grade levels with one common interest: Cheering on the Michigan Football team towards a victory on Saturday's game against Western Michigan. It was basically a public huge pep rally with food, drinks, and free Michigan-related stuff. From Maize Craze, we departed to the Chem building for some free Bubble Tea and returned to South Quad to play cards and relax until the Meijer Mania at 9.
The 2 hours between bubbles and meijer was amazing fun. A huge gathering of the kids on my hall and old friends from Pioneer (Prateek, Gaurav, and Kelvin) started a gigantic game of canasta. We were definitely louder than the drunk frat people outside and the basketball kids on the courts. We attacted so much attention that I think people from other floors even peeked in at times. It's moments like these that I wished school wasn't starting so early.
After a long 2 hours, we decided to take the AATA to Meijer to participate in the chaos. Out of coincidence, I also met Shellzy there shopping with her mom. I actually had a list of objects to buy at Meijer, and amazingly, I was able to pay of all of it. (Fun fact: my list costed exactly $55.55, which I found to be amusing.)Since it was already so late, Prateek decided to go home, get his sleeping bag, and join us at SQuad for the night. Once we got back to our dorm, the card games continued. All the way till about 5:40 in the morning, at which time I really had to go to sleep. So yeah, that explains why I wasn't able to blog yesterday.

Today however, was much more relaxed. Since I went to sleep so late, I also woke up late. Big surprise? =P
I was actually awake for a long time before I decided to get out of bed at 11:30. Prateek and Kelvin stayed the night at our hall lounge, so after I got up, I joined them in the SQuad dining room. Breakfast in college really isn't that bad, much better than the stuff they serve for lunch/dinner anyway. After a hearty breakfast, Prateek and I took the liberty of teaching a few of the out-of-state students how to play Euchre. (Gotta spread the things we love =)) While playing, it reminded me of how much I missed high school and all those random euchre matches during lunch. All the random card strategies that we would discuss after each round. I miss it all so much.
The reason for today's empty schedule was because of the craziness that came with the first game of the season. Everyone was so hyped for the game regardless of whether or not they were actually going. It's amazing how many people wore maize today as I looked out the window and around the halls. Since I, myself, did not buy season tickets and neither did a few others, we all went to Connor's house to watch the game in HD. I'm proud to say that I saw my first Michigan football game today and happy with the results (Even though Western should not have gotten that last touchdown.)
After the game, things began to get quiet. The students from the Big House started walking back, and Prateek and Gaurav had already left. I took this opportunity to sit back and have a little personal time. I went down to No Thai and Bubble Island to grab dinner (since the dining hall in all dorm buildings are closed on Saturday nights) and came back to my dorm to eat in the quietness, away from UMix. When I was on South University Drive I realized that the campus has changed significantly from the way that I used to see it just last year. As I walked pass the people drinking in bars and the ones smoking on the street, I began to think about the many negative aspects that I now see. So on my way back, I walked away from the loud noise and went under the arch that lead me to the Law Quad. Crossing through that silent square and walking away from the disturbances, I knew that I wanted to actually work hard this year in college and do well. I don't think I've ever been.. this motivated by something so small before. It's a very surreal feeling.

This is also random, but if you guys are ever downtown Ann Arbor, be careful of your surroundings. Last night, someone was stabbed on the intersection of South University and East University.

  1. if you'd been keeping up with football last year, that last touchdown by Western is okay in the face of a 3-9 season. really, it is. be joyful.
