I know that this was suppose to be a college blog and all my summer activities were written here. So I'd like to say that the college part of this is officically starting :D.
Even though college really hasn't started yet, the past few days makes it seem like we're already part of the University of Michigan experience. Ever since moving in and meeting the new roommates/hallmates, I feel more connected with the University so I wanted to start blogging now!
Yesterday was move-in day, and as stressful as it is, I really enjoyed it. I guess it helps to know so many people on my hall already, it's like I'm away from home, but not really alone. I have Ruixin 4 doors down and Connor 3 doors down. It's a really cool hall (sadly, still largely populated by asians. no joke, like one asian per room.) My roommate and myself got our room situated with TV and Fridge and Microwave and stuff and it feels very homey now. I took my first official shower in the dorm this morning and it felt awesome. Not the shower itself, but the thought of being on my own. Oh, by the way, my roommate's name is Nathan, for those of you that don't know it. I also got my computer checked out yesterday at a tech station and the people there were just so cool and relaxed. Although I sat there for over two hours waiting for them to solve my inability to connect to Michigan's wifi, I was singing and playing around with all the stuff they had there. The people were so helpful and I even friended a few. I wanted to go back just to play around with the computers there. (I also learned about the Michigan Pop Group, they play famous music from movies and such.) There's so much to do on campus and I ended up getting home late at night and staying up till 2, without watching a single movie mind you! =P
This morning I was so tired that I didn't get up till 11. When I did get up, however, I felt great. For lunch, a few of us went out for Buffalo Wild Wings (my first time) and I met someone another familiar face. It was very weird. The food was pretty good though, I didn't mind it. After lunch Ruixina nd I walked around campus and tried to find the rooms for all of our classes. There's only one thought that comes to mind when I try to think about that process: WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW. I truely understand that I am completely screwed once classes start. It's almost impossible for me to go from the MLB building to Lorch Hall with Michigan Time. There's just no way. Darn you Spanish recitations. But the buildings themselves are impressive too. In MLB there was like a little passage that reminded me of the underground passage in Davinci's Code. In Angell Hall, there's a dark corridor that makes it seem like a passage in a Hogwarts tower. The chem building was so large that we got lost and then found ourselves and then got lost again. (off note: Chem building auditorium = AMAZING!) There were some sketchy places in the buildings too, but I won't go into depth.
But yeah, I was dead tired after walking around. I'm glad I went with Ruixin to find his classes too because I never would have been in those parts of the buildings since I didn't have classes there. Plus side for saying Yes? :D (Melanie!)
After finding classes, we rushed back to our Quad to have dinner with our RA and fellow hallmates. I haven't been that hungry in such a long time. It felt great. But the plan was that after dinner, our whole hall would walk to the Arena for the Freshman Convocation. Plans are meant to be changed right? =P. So Teek came to visit after his Ross Orientation and we decided to ditch our hall and go with Teek instead. I got to meet Cheng and his buddy and along the way Ruirui picked up a few girls. Attah boy! =P
The Convocation was really good, there were some really cool acapella groups. None of which I will join since I have no talent in singing. I heard President Mary Coleman speak for the first time as well as a bunch of other regent members. After this welcoming, I suppose we are starting the school year right? It was also the first time that I saw so many people that are my age gathered together in one building. I mean graduation was large, but this was just HUUUUGE.
(At this point, even I recognize that I'm just rambling but I'm sorry, just a lot to take in at the moment. Even now there are people from other floors meeting and greeting eachother in the hall.)
And then the true chaos begins. Escapade and Artscapade. Very fun. Prateek, Gaurav, Ruixin, Kelvin and I met again at the Escapade, which took place at the Union. There were literally hundreds of kids all over the building. There were games and music and food around every corner. I have never seen that place soo packed before. Since it was so crowded, we decided to leave to the Artscapde which was across the road at the UMMA (University of Michigan Museum of Art). We thought that place might be less packed since everyone seemed to be in the Union, THOUGHT WRONG! There were dacers performing in the main lobby area (including MBT, Michigan Bhangra Team, and a few others that we missed.), artists sketching different sculptures, and people at different stations completing tasks to win a "fabulous prize." There were 7 total: Build something out of legos (architecture), act out a 30 second play (theater), name movie names based on certain picture clues (film, I beasted this xD), sewing pieces of cloth to form a scarf (visual arts), learning how to Hula (dance), and the two others were music and literary arts (which closed before we got there). Since the museum was closing time, we went to collect our prize even though there were stations that we didn't actually get to see. Our prize: posters of movies, bookmark of The Kite Runner, a Michigan sweatshirt, and a Michigan Hoodie (MY VERY FIRST HOODIE!). You don't need me to tell you how pleased I am right now =P. Well.. I suppose I just did. meh.
But yeah, all in all a great day. And only my second at Michigan. I'm expecting a great year here =)
Ohh and a little Euchre in Fred's Common Room before Teek had to go home. No better way to end a day wouldn't you say?
I'll update soon, possibly even tomorrow with the way that these events are popping up...
